As Greece is still dealing with the aftermath of the tragic fires that hit eastern Attica this week, the capital is now having to cope with flash flooding.

Heavy rainfall hit the northeast of Athens, the hardest hit suburbs being the northern suburbs of Maroussi and Ekali.

The civil protection agency revealed the fire brigade responded to over 140 calls for assistance, with many from people trapped in their cars. A number of roads were closed in Kifissia and Nea Erithrea, including Erymanthou bridge and the Athens-Lamia national highway service road.

According to firefighters, some 160 residents found themselves trapped in their homes as a result of the flooding.

The coastal area of Mati, which was devastated in the fires this week also experienced heavy rainfall.
