Alternate Minister for Administrative Reform Giorgos Katrougalos has drafted an amendment that will reinstate thousands of civil sector workers who were sacked or placed in a labour mobility scheme by the previous conservative administration as part of cost-cutting measures.

The amendment, which will be presented to parliament in the next few days, will see some 3,900 former state employees return to their jobs within 45 days after the law is passed.

These will include school guards, teachers and university administrators, as well as former municipal police officers, The latter will be rehired at the renamed “Social Mediation Service.”

Their task will be to enforce regulations pertaining to issues such as parking, noise pollution and the commercial use of public spaces.
