The designers behind New York-based label Marchesa, a label renowned around the globe for its elegance, have drawn inspiration from ancient Greece for their Fall 2017 bridal collection, and to be precise, Greek goddesses.

“Keren (Craig) and I were looking at Greek goddesses in part for our runway show this spring,” said designer Georgina Chapman.
“And we just thought it lent itself so well to bridal. A woman really wants to be a goddess on her day, so we brought in some of those ideas.” According to reporters from AOL present on the day, they achieved just that, stating “you couldn’t help but feel that goddess element flowing throughout”.

The line by British-born Chapman and Craig was presented in a bright and open studio in New York, kicking off the Bridal Market with plenty of glamour and of course, chiffon.

“We translated that feeling with sheernesses, and we took some of that lingerie feel from the runway collection that we just showed and translated that into a more bridal way,” said Craig.

Aside from the goddess influence, the collection was also celebrated for its inclusion of subtle nude and blush coloured gowns; considered a breath of fresh air among those opting for the classic white synonymous with weddings.

But the designers say this is a popular trend that we’ll be seeing on the runway for some time yet, which Chapman attributes to modern-day brides seeking something “a little different from the usual bridal gown”.

“It’s something we’ve played around with in our mainline collections for quite some time, and it’s definitely something that we’ve wanted to move into bridal. And for us it’s working,” added Craig.

“We love playing with the different coloured linings and the blushes – it’s fun!”

The Marchesa empire, inspired by the extravagant and eccentric fashion icon and Italian heiress Marchesa Luisa Casati, was born in 2004 after the designers met at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. Each brings something different to the couture line; Chapman her draping and design expertise, and Craig her textile creations.

Together they have managed to produce runway collections and accessories that have emerged as the red carpet choice for A-list stars including Penélope Cruz, Blake Lively, Cameron Diaz and Emma Watson.
