Collingwood’s Patrick Karnezis has announced his retirement after 25 games of AFL football.

The 23-year-old Greek Australian started his career with the Brisbane Lions after being selected with pick number 25 in the 2010 National Draft, before playing 21 games for the club.

He was traded to Collingwood in 2013 and featured in four senior games.

Karnezis said he wanted to concentrate on the next exciting period of his life.

“After five years in the AFL system, it is the right time for me to step away and pursue other interests in my life such as my studies, overseas travel and opportunities in our family businesses,” he told Collingwood’s website.

He will continue in his role as an AFL Multicultural Ambassador.
