Over 200 grandparents joined their primary school-aged grandchildren to experience a morning at school together for the annual Grandparents and Special Friends Morning at Alphington Grammar.

The special guests were able to join the primary classes for a variety of activities in class, including writing tasks using the latest technology, on line maths games, and even some science experiments.

Grandparents then enjoyed musical performances and a number of special Greek plays performed by grade 3 and 4 students as part of their Greek language and cultural studies lead by artist-in-residence Katrina Poutachidou who takes drama classes at the school for both students and adults, every Thursday night as part of the cultural offerings established by the Greek Community.

The Staff and Parents Association then hosted a special morning tea in the Andrianakos Centre for all to enjoy.

“We know that grandparents and special friends who take on that role, play a very important part in the lives of their grandchildren,” said the principal of the school Dr Vivianne Nikou.

“With many families now having both parents working often, most of the significance grandparents have to children is seen through the support and help they give to their parents.”
