A 300-meter stretch of what is believed to be an ancient carriage road has been discovered during excavations near Megalo Kavouri beach in Vouliagmeni, southern Athens.

According to Culture Ministry officials, the road connected the ancient municipality of Aixonidon Alon, the area covered today by Voula and Vouliagmeni, to the the ancient port.

Based on excavation findings such as ceramic fragments and coins, archaeologists believe the road was in use during the 4th century BC.

Experts believe the road may also have crossed paths with Astiki Odos, a road connecting Athens to coastal Sounio in antiquity.
