Aphroditi Karalis is curating this year’s Greek Australian Cultural League of Melbourne’s (GACL) Antipodean Palette.

The talented young photographer joined the GACL administrative committee last year and has put together a striking selection for the annual group art exhibition.

Now in its seventh year, Antipodean Palette showcases the works of practicing artists in a variety of media such as painting, sculpture, photography, digital prints, computer art and collage to to support and promote visual arts in the community.

Participating artists are: Con Constantinou, Angy Labiris, Nicholas Katris, Aphroditi Karalis, Evstathia Sgardelis, Vasy Petros, Tracey Yannopoulos, Thalia Andrews, Steve Messinis, Katerina Prifti, Theo Papathomas, Stella Papas, and the Masonik Art Collective from WA. They will exhibit a variety of work such as painting, illustration, mixed media and 3D installations, collage, digital art, and photography.

The 10-day exhibition will be held at the Steps Gallery in Carlton. Extra events are scheduled for visitors to the exhibition: on Thursday 17 August, a life-drawing workshop commences at 6.30 pm for 7.00 pm start. Participants will be guided through the drawing process by a tutor and all materials will be supplied at a small cost of $10.00.

The opening ceremony takes place at 2.00 pm on Saturday August 19, launched by Fotis Kapetopoulos, director of Kape Communications, with MC for the opening ceremony John Georgiou, the general secretary of GACL.

Visitors to the exhibition on the opening afternoon of Saturday 19 August will have the opportunity to submit their preference for a People’s Choice art prize to be awarded to the artwork that receives the most votes.

On Sunday 20 August a bilingual poetry reading afternoon will be held at the gallery, beginning at 4.30 pm. Various poets will present their work including Tina Giannoukos.
