'Death threat' caught on video
Accused fears for his life in police corruption case
A man accused of receiving restricted information from a suspended homicide squad detective, had threats made against his life in a Melbourne court this week, his lawyer claims.
Magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg recommended that the matter be referred to police, after the alleged threats were captured on security cameras at Melbourne Magistrates Court.
Mr Michael Con Mantzaris faces accusations of attempting to pervert the course of justice, and receiving information illegally from suspended detective Andrew Tait.
Detective Sen-Constable Andrew Tait is facing 27 charges, including misconduct in public office, unauthorised disclosure of information and possession of a drug of dependence. Tait allegedly provided confidential information to criminals in return for steroids.
He was suspended in December following an eight-month probe into his activities by the Office of Police Integrity. Under surveillance for months, he was allegedly observed meeting organised crime figures.
Mantzaris' barrister, Con Kilias, told the court that a person unknown had made the death threats to Mantzaris and his family while he was waiting in the court foyer for his case to begin, and that the threats had left his client fear for his life. Mr Kilias said Mr Mantzaris had taken to guarding his home at night.
The case returns to court in March with a three-day committal hearing expected in July.
