Dimitris Tsaloumas, revered multi-award winning Greek poet, will read a selection of his works in English on April 10 at the Greek Orthodox Community Building in Melbourne.
This is a rare opportunity for an English-speaking audience to hear Tsaloumas present his poetry, and ask questions of the renowned poet. With multiple publications throughout his career, Tsaloumas’ talent spans across languages with renowned works in Greek and English. Interestingly, his early formal education was in Greek and Italian.
Counted among the many awards he has been bestowed are the National Book Council Award, Patrick White Award and an Emeritus Award from the Literature Board of the Australia Council for outstanding and lifelong contribution to Australian literature. Born in Leros in the Dodecanese island group in Greece, the multilingual Tsaloumas published several volumes of work in Greece, before migrating to Australia.
He came into prominence in Australia when a collection of his Greek poems were published in the bilingual edition of The Observatory in 1983. This was followed by Falcon Drinking, the first of many publications of his English poetry. Several articles, reviews and books have been dedicated to Tsaloumas’ considerable literary achievement.
The reading is organised by The Greek Australian Cultural League and will run as part of the Antipodes Festival cultural events.
