Starting today, employees at the Greek public broadcaster ERT will be holding a series of work stoppages in protest of various ongoing issues.

According to a representative from the workers’ union, POSPERT there have been growing concerns over new hirings in various fields, with employees seeking independence from digital network operator Digea, along with a new unified payroll.

The strikes will commence today, Wednesday 22 February from 12.00 pm until 3.00 pm, and again on Thursday from 3.00 pm to 6.00 pm, with plans for further stoppages to follow.

On Tuesday POSPERT further revealed that the problems at the broadcaster have taken a toll on the working environment and production. They also added the labour laws under which the operation of TV channels is being governed, employee mobility and ERT’s status as a public utility had put the company in an unfavourable position.

As a result of the work stoppages, the union is seeking to organise a meeting with Telecoms and Media Minister Nikos Pappas together with the company’s management.
