Following the triumph of Maria Stuarda (Mary Stuart) in 2015, Melbourne Opera is continuing the great Donizetti trilogy with the Bel Canto masterpiece Anna Bolena (Anne Boleyn).
Boleyn played by Elena Xanthoudakis, is a queen who falls from grace, as her unfaithful king plots to bring his mistress to the throne.
Staged at The Athenaeum (188 Collins Street, Melbourne) for the first time, starring alongside Xanthoudakis is Sally-Anne Russell as Jane Seymour, Eddie Muliaumaseali’i as Henry VIII, Boyd Owen as Richard Percy, Dimity Shepherd as Mark Smeaton, and Phillip Calcagno as Lord Rochefort.
The performance is being directed by Suzanne Chaundy, with music performed in English by the Melbourne Opera chorus and orchestra, conducted by Melbourne Opera Director Greg Hocking and Head of Music Raymond Lawrence.
Following the opening night on Wednesday, there are shows scheduled for Saturday 5 November and Wednesday 9 November, along with a show on 12 November at Monash University’s Robert Blackwood Hall.
