The City of Monash will be hosting a free Easter Sunday lunch on Sunday 12 April for newly arrived Greek migrants, returning expats and the extended community.

Oakleigh’s Greek hub of Eaton Mall will be set up to cater to 2,000 people, with all the traditional Greek Easter trimmings, including lamb on the spit.

“There are a lot of young expats who have returned from Greece, young men and women, even families for that matter, that are really feeling isolated – ostracised from the community,” City of Monash mayor, Paul Klisaris told Neos Kosmos.

“I wanted to put on an Easter Sunday celebration to invite them, and at the same time the broader community, to learn a bit about this holy day on our calendar and how we celebrate it.”

Channelling community events that often take place throughout Greece at the local plateia (town square), Mr Klisaris hopes to give the community a sense of belonging with Greek food and live traditional music performances.

Attending on the day will be the Ambassador of Greece, Harris Dafaranos and his wife, federal member for Chisholm Anna Burke, federal member for Hotham Claire O’Neil, state member of Oakleigh Steve Dimopoulos, along with other local politicians and community members.

“I’ll be there with my family all day celebrating Easter,” said Mr Klisaris.

“I’m sure it will be amazing and I’m looking forward to it.”

The Greek Easter Mayoral Event will take place at Eaton Mall, Oakleigh on Sunday 12 April, 2015 between noon and 4.00 pm.
