Google Maps coming to a store near you
4 Dec 2011

With the exception of the Android mobile operating system, Google Maps has been the most successful product to come from the Mountain View Company in recent years. The service has become a staple on most mobile handsets and generates significant user traffic.

Now Google are taking their mapping to a whole new level. They are teaming up with shopping mall owners, airport and transportation hub operators, and major department store owners to provide indoor mapping services.

It's an interesting concept. Not only will you get directions on how to find a location, but you will now get specific directions and information on the destination itself. Floor plans and store information are just some of the services being included in the improved Google Maps service.

So why is this a game-changer?

Imagine you're using Google Maps in a shopping centre. A local store owner can send you a targeted broadcast message saying "now that you're here, come to us for a special offer". The sheer thought of localised targeted advertising will have many pony-tailed marketing execs salivating uncontrollably.

The service will launch in USA and Japan first, and will come to our shores sometime in 2012. It will initially only work on Android products, but will most likely transition across to the iPhone and others.
