The Minister for Education Martin Dixon, and the Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship Matthew Guy have announced an expansion of language school enrolment to four-year-olds, and a new website to deliver the Coalition’s promise.

At the launch of its new website, Love of Languages, Mr Guy and Mr Dixon, accompanied by language ambassadors including journalist Helen Kapalos and Hawthorn great Robert DiPierdomenico, pledged their recommitment to the Napthine government’s Vision for Language’s Education, first announced in 2011.

Mr Dixon said learning a second language can be pivotal to accelerating a student’s primary language and general education.

“What better way to prepare our young Victorians for a life living, working and studying around the world than providing them with the opportunity to start learning a second language before they start school,” said Mr Dixon.

“That is why the Napthine government has made a commitment for every student in a government school from prep to year 10 to start learning from prep next year a second language by 2025.”

Mr Guy also welcomed the new measures, adding they will add to Victoria’s multiculturalism platform.

“With 27 per cent of Victorians born overseas, maintaining or learning a language other than English ensures the strength of our multicultural community and also boosts economic value through the international trade and investment doors that languages open up for us.”
