An eight-metre sinkhole which appeared on a runway at Rhodes International Airport in Greece caused the airport to temporarily shut down, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded overnight.

A previous crack on the tarmac that hadn’t been properly repaired reopened to a much larger extent after Tuesday’s torrential downpour.

Mainly vacationers from the UK, the unlucky passengers were delayed for 24 hours as they waited for contractors to repair the runway.

Filling the crater took just over 10 hours and most flights resumed within minutes.

The delays, however, spurred many Twitter complaints due to the lack of information provided by the airport’s management and poor organisation of the airline.

“The airport was closed for 14 hours, the runway has since been repaired and reopened at 6.00 am this morning (UK time),” Thomson Airways, one of the airlines affected by the closure, said in a statement.
