Greek parents are more likely than their counterparts in Denmark or Sweden to supervise their children surfing the Internet but are less aware of the online risks threatening youngsters, a European Union study has shown.

These risks were highlighted yesterday during a conference in Athens attended by representatives of the Greek Awareness Center - a European Commission-backed Internet safety campaign accessible at www.saferinternet.gr - the Archbishopric of Athens and EC officials based in the capital.

It was agreed that the safety of Greek children surfing the Web is of increasing concern as Internet penetration in Greece is growing at a significant rate.

Officials of the Greek Awareness Center said they had received a total of 443 appeals in the past four months.

Half of these were requests for specific information, 25 percent sought advice about Internet addiction, 12 percent were reporting alleged instances of online fraud, seven percent were complaints about dangerous material and another seven percent were reporting alleged bullying.
