Acropolis Champions again!
Greece sweep the 2009 Acropolis Tournament ahead of next week’s Eurobasket match against FYROM.
Greece came out on top in the Acropolis tournament.
Jonas Kazlauskas reign as head coach of Greece’s basketball team got off to winning ways this week as he guided his side to victory in the Acropolis Tournament against strong opposition in the form of Lithuania, Russia and Serbia.
Greece achieved a 100 percent record in the tournament, beating all three sides amid some tremendous matches.
Greece managed to win the tournament by defeating Kazlauskas’s countrymen, Lithuania, 75-73 at the OAKA indoor arena on Wednesday.
The win came a day after a slightly easier win over Russia as Greece won 71-63.
Greece overcame Serbia 66-65 in the first match of the tournament. Kazlauskas, who guided Lithuania to the bronze medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, used the opportunity to look at some players who have not been tested at this level, such as Greek-Americans Costas Koufos and Nick Calathes.
The Acropolis Tournament was an opportunity for Greece as well as the other three teams to warm up for the European Basketball Championship, due to take place in Poland from September 7 to 20.
Greece will play FYROM in its first game on September 7. Greece’s first proper test will come a day later when the team meets Croatia in Poznan, while Greece’s final Group A match will take place against Israel on September 9.
The group’s top three teams will progress to the Qualifying Round which will also feature the top three teams from Group B (Germany, Russia, Latvia and an as yet unnamed opponent).
