Hotel rates in Athens and Greece in general continue to be very competitive this month, according to online travel booking site Trivago.

The average online rate for a night’s stay in a double room at a Greek hotel in November comes to 84 euros, showing a rise of just 2.4 per cent from the same month last year. This ranks Greece as the eighth cheapest destination among 24 countries in Europe based on hotel prices that Trivago compiles.

The average online rate in Europe amounts to 105 euros, while Poland and Bulgaria have the lowest rates, at 57 and 59 euros per night respectively.

The average rate this month at Athens hotels amounts to 79 euros, posting a significant rise of 11.3 per cent compared with November 2013. Among the 50 European cities sampled, Athens is the 10th cheapest in this respect.

At the same time hotels in Rome charge an average of 109 euros, in Istanbul 98 euros, in Madrid 96 euros and in Lisbon 91 euros. The lowest rates are in Zaragoza, central Spain (58 euros) and in Sofia (60 euros). The highest rates are to be found in Geneva and London (229 and 220 euros respectively).
