The head of the Athens Traders Association, Panagis Karellas, is happy that Greek police will introduce a new scheme aimed at curbing crime in the city’s historic centre and other downtown areas.

In a statement released on Friday, Karellas noted that the new scheme included proposals already put forward by the trade association in view of revamping the capital and promoting the city as “attractive tourist destination.”

The scheme includes an increase in the number of police officers patrolling areas with high crime rates as well as operations aimed at cracking down on crime rackets including drug trafficking, contraband goods and prostitution.
