Greeks ‘Taking Woodstock’
Comedian Demetri Martin (C) is one of four Greek Americans involved with the movie ‘Taking Woodstock.’
Ang Lee's latest flick Taking Woodstock which celebrates the 40th anniversary of the historic musical festival that changed- and defined- an entire generation has not one, not two- but FOUR known Greek American connections.
The film stars son-of-a-priest Demetri Martin, who has become a staple in American comedy with his appearances on the Daily Show on Comedy Central and a hugely successful career.
Greek American Anthoula Katsimatides (niece of John Catsimatides) has her bigscreen debut in a brief role as Esther, who attempts to give loving advice to her younger brother (Martin's role) about escaping the clutches of their parents and becoming free.
Sophia Costas did the background casting for the film (5000 people!) and the executive producer was Celia Costas (Sophia's cousin) who's won two Emmys and has produced dozens of Hollywood films.
Celia Costas was overheard joking on the set during the filming of Anthoula's scene with Demetri that it was ironic that in all of Hollywood, they found two Greeks to play the roles of two Jews!
Anthoula further noted that "Ang Lee was amazing to work with. Quiet, patient and incredibly insightful. I was so fortunate to have had the experience and am truly grateful to have a small part in such a quality film."
Message to Anthoula: There are no small parts! Good luck!
