Greece now has a record number of 10,000 accommodation units (hotels, hostels and campsites), according to official data compiled by the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels.

The figures showed that 65 new units opened and 55 reopened last year, while 58 hotels shut down or converted into rooms for rent.

According to Chamber president Giorgos Tsakiris, this was the first time in the 100 years of tourism records that the number of hotels and camping units in the country had reached 10,000 units. This is particularly significant given the lack of cash flow in the local market that has made it much more difficult to implement investments.

A significant feature of the 2014 figures concerns the increase in the number of beds at high-quality units, which points to the improvement in the country’s tourism product. Tsakiris attributed that to tourism growth and expectations that it will continue on its rising course.
