Festival Hellenika will launch tonight with a special musical night full of rebetika, laika and songs from Stelios Kazantzidis, the first of many musical, artistic and cultural events planned for the five-month program.

As one of Adelaide’s oldest festivals, Festival Hellenika is an opportunity to celebrate the arts and their Hellenic connections in the state.

Headlining the festival will be 2015 Music Hellenika performance of Greece, Mother of Mine, composed by Stavros Xarhakos. The event will also feature vocalists Jim Mountzouris, Stathis Papastergos, Deanne Taliangis, Stephanie Gates and an eight-piece band.

The play The Good Son by Elena Carapetis will start its season in April, while artist Despina Kastanos will exhibit her work under the theme ‘Sensual Sights, Hellenic Themes’ in March.

A number of talks have been organised, including new Greek migration, memories of Lemnos and Thessaloniki – Glimpses, Sounds and Tastes
