Fotis Kouvelis has been re-elected as leader of Democratic Left (DIMAR) despite the party’s MPs asking him to step down.

Kouvelis won 68.34 per cent of 745 delegates’ votes at the party’s conference on Sunday. Dimitris Loukas gained 21.01 per cent and 10.71 per cent of delegates cast blank ballots.

Last week the party’s MPs had asked Kouvelis not to run for re-election. After winning the vote, Kouvelis shrugged off concerns about the lack of unity in his party.

“DIMAR is a responsible power that can bring change,” said the leader. “We are progressing united and with clear political positions.”
