Bayern Munich recovered from the shock of a stunning Patrice Evra goal to score three times in quick succession to beat Manchester United 3-1 and reach the Champions League semi-finals this week.

Wayne Rooney had missed a chance to put United 2-1 ahead on the night when he scuffed a shot from in front of goal and Bayern went though 4-2 on aggregate to stay on course for a treble and continue United’s miserable season.

United manager David Moyes, who will not be able to offer the club Champions League football next year, said his team had paid for switching off after taking the lead.

“It probably went wrong 30 seconds after we scored,” he told Sky Sports.

“If you’re a schoolboy you’re told don’t concede after you score.”

With United seventh in the Premier League and also out of the FA Cup, Moyes said he has seen signs of improvement in United’s ranks as they rebuild after Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure last season.

Atletico Madrid hit new heights in their incredible season when Koke’s goal secured a 2-1 aggregate success against Barcelona that put Atletico into the last four of Europe’s elite club competition for the first time in 40 years.

The stunning 1-0 victory followed last week’s 1-1 draw in Barcelona in their Champions League quarter-final, first leg and denied Barca a record-extending seventh consecutive appearance in the last four.

Chelsea snatched a dramatic late goal through Demba Ba to beat Paris St Germain 2-0 and reach the Champions League semi-finals on the away goals rule on another memorable European night at Stamford Bridge.

Real Madrid also joined Chelsea in the semi-finals with a 3-2 aggregate win, despite losing 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund.

But Ba’s goal in the 87th minute levelled the tie at 3-3 and Chelsea, evoking memories of their battling and ultimately successful campaign two seasons ago, went through on away goals thanks to Eden Hazard’s penalty in Paris last week.

It is the seventh time in 11 Champions League campaigns that Chelsea have reached the last four and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is on course to become the first manager to win the European Cup with three clubs after triumphs with Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2010.

Lacklustre Real Madrid edged past Borussia Dortmund 3-2 on aggregate after slumping to a 2-0 defeat to advance to the Champions League semi-finals and stay on track for their 10th crown.

Real, with top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo left on the bench due to a minor knee injury, saw their 3-0 advantage from the first leg in Madrid almost evaporate in a disastrous first half for them.
