When September rolls around, it’s a happy time for Melburnians. September signals the end to another dull and cold winter and the start of a downhill run to the end of the year; it’s the final quarter and it’s full of energy.

The start of spring means the end of the football season and the beginning of a series of fashion-focused events.

Kicking them off is Melbourne Spring Fashion Week (MSFW) from 5-11 September. Organised by the City of Melbourne, this is the city’s more accessible fashion festival, featuring well-known brands, affordable fashion shows and a full calendar of free events.

It’s a great way to launch into the spring season and get some inspiration for your spring racing carnival and Christmas party outfits.

Events to look out for during MSFW:

Designer Series

The highlight of MSFW, the Designer Series features four nights of runway events and allows you to check out the latest collections from some of our best local designers, including Arthur Galan AG, Yeojin Bae, Gorman, Fernando Barraza, Alpha60 and many more. All shows at Melbourne Town Hall, tickets $20-30.

MSFW @ City Square

Melbourne’s City Square is transformed into a fashion hub during the festival, with fashion shows, dance, music, film and workshops. Best of all, it’s free! Events include: the Kevin Murphy Style Bar (free mini hair makeovers and styling workshops); runway shows from your favourite chain stores (Jigsaw, French Connection, Marcs, etc.); presentations from designers; and the Nikon Photo Studio.

City Series

The City Series offers a chance to discover some of Melbourne’s hidden designers and artisans, plus beauty, hair and associated businesses. The series has everything from fashion parades, exhibitions and workshops to launches, cocktail parties and demonstrations.

Emerging Designer Series

Check out new and emerging talent at this series of events. Events include runways shows from RMIT fourth year design students and an exhibition that pushes the boundaries of fashion.
