The organistion Merimna of Pontian Ladies (Oceania) are doing their part to raise awareness of ovarian cancer.

Close to 50 women attended a luncheon last weekend held at Richmond’s Kritamos Hellenic Cuisine, where prizes donated by sponsors helped raise over $2,000 for the worthy cause.

“The luncheon was definitely a joyous event. Some money was raised, friends were able to catch up and enjoy a delicious meal with plenty of wine and lots of laughs,” said secretary Helen Jasonides.

The event was dedicated to the memory of Liz Akrivopoulos, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer earlier this year, bringing the group’s attention to the disease.

“The most important thing to come out of the event was the message of being proactive about our health.

“Ovarian cancer is extremely difficult to diagnose and presents with many everyday symptoms,” she said.

The Oceania chapter of Merimna of Pontian Ladies was established in 2006 and is made up of women endeavouring to draw people’s attention to issues affecting the community.
