A search is currently underway to find a missing EgyptAir aircraft, after it vanished off the radar over the Mediterranean Sea this morning.

Flight MS804 from Paris to Cairo, which had 66 people on board, is feared to have crashed into the sea reports Reuters.

Among those on board were 56 passengers, including a child and two babies, seven cabin crew, and three security personnel.

It is still unknown whether any Australians were on board.

“The Australian Embassies in Cairo and Paris are making urgent enquiries with local authorities to determine whether any Australians are on board the missing Egypt Air flight, MS 804,” said The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in a statement.

The search and rescue operation has now been joined by the Egyptian Armed Forces and Greek authorities.

EgyptAir says the aircraft was flying at 37,000 feet (11,277m) when it disappeared at 2:45am Cairo time (10:45am AEST), soon after after entering into Egyptian airspace.

In an interview with CNN, EgyptAir vice-chairman Ahmed Abdel confirmed that no distress call had been received from the aircraft.

Conditions while crossing the Mediterranean are believed to have been calm.

“There was nothing unusual,” Mr Adel told Reuters.

“The search and rescue aircraft from the Egyptian air force are at the position where we lost contact. They are still looking and so far there is nothing found.”
