The Monash Council has collected more than $1.7 million from parking fines in the first six months of the current financial year. The council's second quarter management report showed that almost $825,000 was reaped from parking fines between October and December alone, more than the expected $765,000. Parking officers handed out more than 200 infringements a day during the past three months at an average cost of about $70.

"People who park illegally or remain in parking bays for a long period of time can impact on the safety of others," Cr Perri said.

"Parking restrictions are in place across Monash to ensure equitable access to parking," she said. In November last year, former mayor Greg Male said the council would not commit to redirecting unexpected funds from parking fines to projects across the municipality.
