New Democracy’s leadership contest will be held in two rounds set for November 22 and 29, the party’s electoral committee decided on Thursday following a marathon five-hour session.

Meanwhile, the campaigns of the candidates – current leader Evangelos Meimarakis, ex-ministers Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Adonis Georgiadis, and Central Macedonia governor Apostolos Tzitzikostas – are heating up.

Mitsotakis launched his campaign tour with a visit to Cyprus, as Tzitzikostas inaugurated his Athens offices on Panepistimiou Avenue.

In-party rivalry has not affected the conservatives’ zero-tolerance stance vis-a-vis the leftist-led government, which is drawing fire from all four. Meimarakis on Thursday attacked Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in the wake of an IMF report suggesting Greece may need additional measures worth €1.35 billion to cover its primary deficit.

“Don’t even think about bringing new measures to parliament,” Meimarakis said.
