Greek supported clubs continue to dominate the Victorian National Premier League (NPL). After 15 rounds South Melbourne, the Oakleigh Cannons, Heidelberg United and the Bentleigh Greens take up the top four spots on the ladder.
NPL leader South Melbourne will be looking to continue its good form this weekend, and continue its assault on the championship when it hosts sixth placed Green Gully SC at home. South has only dropped four points all season, and bounced back last week, with a 2-1 win over Port Melbourne, following its disappointing loss to the Melbourne Knights the week prior in the Docherty Cup.
Heidelberg and Oakleigh both lost ground on South last week playing out a 1-1 draw at Olympic Village.
Oakleigh will be hoping to bounce back with three much needed points when it hosts the 12th placed Port Melbourne Sharks at home this weekend, to continue its assault on South’s six point gap at the top.
Heidelberg should topple the Goulburn Valley this weekend when it hosts the Suns at Olympic Village.
In another ‘Greek derby’ last week, Northcote City shocked the Bentleigh Greens when it won 2-1 away, meaning Bentleigh too lost ground on top spot. Bentleigh will be hosted by seventh placed Pascoe Vale, while Northcote will take the trip up the highway to take on Ballarat at Morshead Park Stadium.
In other matches to feature this weekend, Hume City will host Dandenong Thunder and Werribee will host the Melbourne Knights.
In other news from around Victoria, Football Federation Victoria (FFV) has announced that six Victorian clubs have met the requirements of the ‘Don’t Stand By. Stand up!’ pledge.
The clubs named were Hume City FC, FC Williamstown, Keilor Wolves SC, Sunbury United, FC Bulleen and Fawkner FC.
The campaign aims at stamping out racism from local leagues and games, and is a joint initiative by FFV and VicHealth, which empowers club officials, players and spectators to intervene when they witness any act of racism.
In order to take part in the campaign clubs must have a minimum of two representatives register for the FFC Respect and Responsibility course, promote the pledge via the respective club’s Facebook page, complete an online survey and display posters of Melbourne Victory’s Andrew Nabbout, Melbourne Heart/City’s Jason Hoffman and Melbourne Victory W-League star Gulcan Koca.
Football codes around the world are taking active steps to stamp out racism in the game.
