The Vitsenzos Kornaros, a Greek ferry with 227 passengers and 55 crew members on board, had been on a route from the main port of Piraeus to Rhodes before it run aground off the port of Kassos island.

The ferry had successfully made seven stops on the way, reaching the ports of Milos, Santorini, Anafi, Herakleion and Siteia with no problems. As it approached the small island of Kassos, which belongs to the Dodecanese island complex northeast of Crete, the captain faced serious problems controlling the ferry, amid very strong winds and bad weather, therefore approached to dock at the closest piece of land.

Two fishing boats tried to tug “Vincenzos Kornaros” into the port from a nearby island but failed. A tug boat was also sent from the Cycladic island of Mykonos, according to the Greek coastguard.

“There have been no injuries among the passengers and crew,” the ferry’s captain Dimitris Lavvas told reporters via phone.
