While most eyes were on Friday nights chilling Oakleigh Cannons and Bentleigh Greens, another Greek Derby will get the community stirring this weekend.

League leaders South Melbourne will face an unpredictable Northcote City. With the race for top spot over for twelve teams in the NPL, hope is still momentarily there for the Cannons to overtake South Melbourne.

The equation is simple: if South wins on Sunday and Oakleigh loses to Bentleigh, the NPL title will go to South Melbourne.

Northcote will be approaching the match with a huge push to keep the leaders away from that title just a little bit longer.

Already, City have proven to be quite a challenge for South.

They held South Melbourne in round 19 to a 1-1 draw, when South was creating another sizeable winning streak.

Northcote also took three points off third placed Heidelberg United, showing that although their title is gone, their season certainly isn’t.

Former Adelaide United youngster Liam Wooding added another contender for goal of the season when he curled an unstoppable effort past Griffin McMaster into the top-right corner in the first half.

Heidelberg pushed and pushed as they dominated the second half but struggled to equalise.

South coach Chris Taylor won’t be considering Sunday’s match as an easy three points and will be executing caution.

He knows he’ll need to lock down the attacking duo of Milos Lujic and Michael Eagar to make sure their lead stays intact.

Last week Taylor’s team managed to overcome Dandenong Thunder narrowly, finishing 1-0.

Jamie Reed’s goal in the 59th minute was enough to separate the sides during a back and forth contest which went right down to the wire.

They will have to do a lot more Sunday night to make it past City, but the biggest challenge is still to come.

Oakleigh Cannons and South Melbourne will finally face once another in the match of the season next week.
