Greek Australian Jack Zervos, an amateur treasure hunter, has stumbled across former rugby league premiership player Preston Campbell’s ultimate treasure – his premiership ring.

Zervos, using his metal detector, found the ring buried under 10 cm of sand, at Jack Evans Boat Harbour, Tweed Heads, NSW, and immediately rang Campbell when he saw the words ‘NRL Premiers 2003’ and the number six inscribed on the ring.

Campbell was not aware that he had lost the ring, and believes one of his children had probably removed it and lost it.

“How I lost it is a complete mystery but I can tell you how relieved I am to get it back,” he said.

“I’d never been to the area where Jack found the ring and I got the call, I rang my missus and asked her to check if mine was still in the box. It wasn’t.”

“Winning a premiership ring is the pinnacle of your career so I’m extremely grateful to Jack for finding it.”

Campbell offered Zervos a reward for his find, which included VIP tickets to Gold Coast Titans games, where he finished his career, but Zervos rejected the offer.

“Just seeing the joy on Preston’s face was reward enough for me,” Zervos said.
