Russia is mulling loosening its embargo on agricultural products from some European Union countries, including Greece, President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.
In an interview with Izvestia newspaper published this week, Peskov said that under the rules of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Moscow is not entitled to exempt an EU member state from sanctions against the bloc.
However, he said, direct deliveries of agricultural products can be substituted by “imports of raw materials [to be processed at] Russia-based facilities.”
The Greek government has asked Russia to partially lift the food embargo it imposed in summer 2014 in response to EU sanctions, which has taken a hefty toll on exports.
