The humble meat pie has been replaced by succulent souvlakis as the A-League embraces the Greek staple for the grand final.

Greek Australian chef George Calombaris will be bringing his signature souvlakis to game day, with fans being asked to vote on their favourite one.

Fans can choose from Gazi’s famous soft shell crab souvlaki, a Jimmy Grants-inspired lamb number or a Hellenic Republic chicken souv.

Football Federation Australia says the top polling recipe will go on sale at the final.

It’s part of a larger campaign to “put the fans first” and have them decide on what they will see on grand final day.

They will be able to vote on who will sing the national anthem, which song half-time band Peking Duk will perform and also get to vote on the nine-person panel of experts for the prestigious Joe Marston Medallist.

FFA CEO David Gallop says that he’s happy to hand the fans the reins to some extent after such a strong year.

“This campaign, a first in Australian sport, is just another example of how we continue to grow our game and reward our fans,” Gallop said.

Currently, the lamb souvlaki is in the lead with 57 per cent of the vote. The chicken is trailing at 31 per cent and the soft shell crab is last at 12 per cent.
