Last Monday, at the Ithacan Philanthropic Society building in Melbourne, Athens University professor Athina Zoniou-Sideri gave a talk on the state of education in Greece after the onset of the multiple crisis.

According to Professor Zoniou-Sideri, in the last five years the education budget in Greece has shrunk by 35.5 per cent, and it is expected to shrink by a further 14 per cent by the year 2016. Teachers’ remunerations in Greece have been cut by 45 per cent, teacher numbers have been reduced by 30 per cent and the number of students who do not attend any schooling has increased by 11. 4 per cent.
