Two Cretan football fans were remanded in custody this week for allegedly assaulting a rival supporter, who is in a coma after suffering serious head injuries.

The two suspects, aged 24 and 27, are accused of attacking their victim, an Ethnikos Piraeus fan, when his team was playing Irodotos on Crete.

A third man, aged 22, was released after posting 2,000 euros in bail.

A fourth suspect, 32, is due to face a prosecutor tomorrow.

The four men face charges of attempted murder and grievous bodily harm.

The 46-year-old soccer fan was pronounced clinically dead on Sunday after he received several blows on his head and was carried unconscious to the local hospital.

Two more Ethnikos fans were reported injured.

Ethnikos president Alexis Angelopoulos alleged that the referee insisted on finishing the game after the stoppage from the clashes, even going as far as asking the match doctor to stay at the stadium for the game to go on. Angelopoulos added that it took half an hour for the ambulance to arrive.
