Greek Australian photographer Georgia Metaxas will this month showcase her work in London, as part of the group exhibition ‘Uncertain States’, that opens at Four Corners Gallery, London, on Thursday 9 October.

Nine artists were selected by the panel of the inaugural Uncertain States Open 2014 exhibition, in a bid to find the very best contemporary lens-based art.
Photographers Ellen Nolan, Georgia Metaxas, Lydia Goldblatt, Freya Gabie, Andrei Nacu, Georgina McNamara, Emilia Moisio, Ellie Davies and Dominic Hawgood were selected by an autonomous panel that included artists, writers and art strategists. Each judge will select their own best of show and offer the reasons why the work has inspired them.

A 2014 Bowness Prize finalist, Georgia Metaxas is a Melbourne photographer whose work investigates the personal and cultural manifestations of ritual.

This is predominantly explored through portraiture using a documentary framework and frequently incorporating elements of studio portraiture. One of Metaxas’ portraits from the series The Mourners, 2011, was chosen to represent her at ‘Uncertain States’. The Mourners is a series of portraits documenting the ritual of wearing black as a signifier of perpetual mourning.

The exhibition is on at Four Corners Gallery, 121 Roman Rd, London, from 9 to 31 October. For more information, visit www.georgiametaxas.com
