Incidents like the arson attack of the Athens Voice free-press magazine in Athens are direct attacks against democracy, government Vice President and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos said last week.

The attack aims to undermine the sense of safety of citizens and the right journalists have to express themselves freely and work safely, he noted, adding:
“Our condemnation of such events is explicit and unequivocal, because they aim against democracy.”

Athens Voice is a tabloid-size periodical distributed free of charge at various locations throughout the city. Its offices were destroyed by a fire that broke out last Thursday after the front door was smashed and the premises doused with a flammable liquid, according to authorities.

The government and party leaders condemned the attack.
