Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos starts a two-day visit to Turkey on Saturday for talks with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu.

Venizelos, who is also Greece’s deputy premier, is further scheduled to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The visit comes amid tension over energy spoils in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

On Sunday, Venizelos will attend the Thronal Feast of St Andrew the Apostle at the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Istanbul.

Pope Francis is also scheduled to attend.

Meanwhile on Thursday Venizelos spoke with Nicos Anastasiades on the phone ahead of the Cypriot president’s heart surgery in the US on December 4.

Also, in his capacity as foreign minister, Venizelos is to meet SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras on Friday.

Tsipras is expected at the Foreign Ministry at 1 p.m.

Officially, the agenda for the talks consists of foreign policy rather than domestic issues.
