Police will be on alert this long weekend to identify and prevent the use of illegal fireworks as part of Easter celebrations.

One tradition within the Greek community in particular involves the lighting of fireworks at Easter Saturday midnight mass.

Leading Senior Constable Liz Sidiropoulos said the use of fireworks during Easter celebrations wouldn’t be tolerated by police.

“We respect the right of people to practice their faith, but the use of fireworks is heavily discouraged,” LSC Sidiropoulos said.

“We know the use of fireworks can result in serious injury and even death.
“Over the years we have received reports of serious burns and critical injuries at Greek churches in Melbourne.
“Fireworks are considered explosives under the Dangerous Goods Act and heavy penalties apply.”

The fine for those caught using fireworks is approximately $15,000.

Anyone who witnesses this illegal behaviour should contact their local police immediately.

Information about the sale or use of illegal fireworks can be reported to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or by submitting a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
