The Victorian Government aims to ensure Victoria becomes the future language capital of Australia through a new bilingual language model announced last week.

The model, made up of three key initiatives, is set to revitalise the teaching of languages in Victoria.

Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship, Nicholas Kotsiras said "the plan is to revolutionise languages education as we endeavour to become an international model for language teaching".

The State Government include languages in schools as a way to ensure a successful multicultural society.

The three initiatives include a bilingual training program; the identification of nine language-based clusters of government schools in metropolitan, rural and regional Victoria; and research into high performing international jurisdictions which provide evidence that language programs support the learning of other subjects such as mathematics.

Mr Kotsiras said the government will be working alongside the Victorian Coalition Government to create an internationally recognised language program.

"We will need our workforce of tomorrow to be strong, confident and effective communicators - cultural brokers using their language skills to communicate with the world."
