The Finance Ministry is seriously considering allowing taxpayers to submit their income tax declarations after the official deadline without having to pay the fines that the law currently provides for.
Sources say that the ministry will table an amendment in Parliament next week allowing taxpayers and accounting offices to submit overdue statements without a fine up to two to three days after the deadline while also accepting the retail receipts that allow for lower tax payments.
In a letter to minister Gikas Hardouvelis on Wednesday the federation of tax experts asked for the amendment to be tabled in a bid to avoid placing an extra burden on salary workers and pensioners which would amount up to 2,100 euros per taxpayer. The tax experts cite delays in the issue of circulars which often required additional clarification, the reduction of the submission period from five months (that the law provides for) to four, and the “huge technical problems of the online platform”.
