The Oscar-winning film, directed by Michael Cacoyannis, will screen at the Hellenic Museum this Sunday as part of its Summer Cinema Festival 2015.

The film is a classic not only for the mesmerising music composed by Mikis Theodorakis or the script based on the book by Nikos Kazantzakis. The characters, played by Alan Bates (Basil), Anthony Quinn (Alexis Zorbas), Irini Pappas (widow) and comedian Sotiris Moustakas (village idiot), practically come alive on screen and dance us into the legends of Crete. Basil, a half Greek, half British writer with a very tight upbringing finds he has a small inheritance on the island of Crete, and travels to the island determined to re-open an old lignite mine and cure his writer’s block. At the port of Piraeus in Athens he becomes acquainted with robust peasant Alexi Zorbas. They become inseparable and after many adventures and realisations, Zorbas ends up changing the Englishman’s life forever.
