After many successful performances in festivals all over Europe and at the largest Children’s Theatre Festival in Washington DC in 2011, Greek Children’s Theatre company, Aeroplio, is coming to Australia to perform shows in the Greek language for the students and parents of the Greek community.
Aimed at primary school students, Of the fire, of the wind and of the road without return is a story originating in the Dodecanese islands of the Aegean Sea, about three prince brothers who embark upon on a journey to the Sleeping Kingdom in search of medicine to make their father see the light of day again. They each choose a different road and each face great obstacles – fire, wind, dragons and dragon-children. Through rough roads, heroic adventures and funny incidents, only one of the three brothers will succeed.
Puppets, masks, marionettes and dragons come alive on stage as the storyteller interacts with the audience inviting them to be part of the story. Of fire, of wind and of the road without return is no usual theatre performance. It is a creative game and at the same time, educational and cultural. Children, not only have a good time, they heighten their imagination and widen their horizons.
For the secondary students Ancient Pathos presents some of the most powerful monologues from the ancient Greek tragedies Electra, Iphigenia and Antigone.
Combined with the real time construction of an ancient mask which later becomes part of the performance, this inventive theatrical and educational presentation is designed to deliver an understanding of the reverence of Greek tragedies and the reasons they are so respected by the world stage.
Aeroplio is a non-profit organisation founded in 1985 that draw their inspiration from mythology, history and literature. Their unique story-telling performances have graced international stages all over the world.
They will be performing in Sydney and Melbourne during May. The first show is on Thursday 17 May at Lexi-Keilor College. Aeroplio will be performing for the Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria on Sunday 20 May at Alphington Grammar. They will be in Sydney for one performance of two wonderful and unique shows at the Greek Orthodox Community club on Sunday 27 May.
