Arts Centre caught fire in New Year fireworks
The iconic Melbourne Arts Centre was set ablaze by fireworks
The spire of the iconic Melbourne Arts Centre was set ablaze during fireworks for New Year's Eve celebration.
Fireworks that were let off at the centre caused minor damage to the spire as it was set alight. More than half a million people witnessed the spectacular fireworks show put on in Melbourne, but no one was hurt due to the blaze and mishap.
The Arts Centre's acting CEO, Tim Brinkman said: “While it is unlikely that anything other than cosmetic damage has
occurred, the MFB has asked Arts Centre Melbourne to arrange a
structural inspection of the spire; arrangements are being made for this
to happen."
“While it was a somewhat more
spectacular start to 2012 than we anticipated, I am very pleased to
report that no-one was hurt and that the damage appears minimal. Further
inspections will be carried out in daylight.’’
