Canberra’s premier Chamber Ensemble, The Griffyn Ensemble will be transporting Old Melbourne Gaol to the Peloponnese in Greece with Mikis Theodorakis’ rousing March of the Spirit – a folk oratorio with words by Angelos Sikelianos – written whilst Theodorakis was exiled in Zatouna in the 1960’s during the Greek military junta – heralding a new dawn for democracy and freedom.

The work is part of Behind Bars – music written and performed in concentration camps and prisons. The Griffyn Ensemble will be telling a story of the deepest humanity, weaving together threads throughout the 20th century.

The Griffyn Ensemble is offering the Melbourne Greek community 2 for 1 tickets. Simply go to http://griffyn.iwannaticket.com.au and use the password ‘JAIL’ or call 0466 480 104 for this special offer.

The concert includes:

– The iconic setting of Old Melbourne Gaol transformed into a virtual museum of music from prisons, with works being heard throughout the building
– Be moved by the tragic story of Theresienstadt concentration camp, with the gorgeous children’s opera Brundibar by Czech composer Hans Krasa, as well as Yiddish-inspired artsong by Viktor Ullmann
– Witness a Griffyn first, featuring a very special (but also very secret) guest…
– Hear the story of WW2 told to the iconic music of Olivier Messiaen’s most famous work: The Quartet for the End of Time
– In true Griffyn fashion see country music legend Johnny Cash be transformed into avant gardist Henry Cowell in the context of San Quentin prison, where Cowell was imprisoned for being bisexual in the 1930s
– And the highlight of the concert: Be inspired by Greek’s most famous composer and cultural hero Mikis Theodorakis’ rousing folk oratorio: the brilliant March of the Spirit – heralding a new dawn for democracy and freedom to the text of Civil War poet Angelos Sikelianos
