This month the Kew Court House will be commemorating one of Greece’s most influential icons, Sotiria Bellou in a celebratory concert.

The late performer was legendary in the scene of Rebetika, and was best known for her deep voice, emotion, pride and openness to life’s struggles – something which resonated with a nation rebuilding from the effects of the post-war devastation.

The Rebetiko genre, often cited as Greece’s answer to the blues, was born out of a specific urban subculture, reflecting the harsh realities of an oppressed lifestyle of the times.

Traditionally the music of the poor and deprived, Rebetiko is recognised as the music of the people, exploring themes of love and loss, while celebrating the joy, sorrow and difficulties that come with everyday life.

This one-off-performance will be performed by a unique ensemble of musicians sharing the passion and appreciation of Sotiria Bellou’s legacy.

The performance will be led by some of Melbourne’s most prolific Greek musicians, including the ambassador of the 2014 Melbourne Festival, Achilles Yiangoulli on bouzouki and guitar, Stavrina Dimitriou on vocals, Dean Georgalas on bouzouki and Con Kalamaras on guitar and baglama.

Cost of entry is $25.00 per person.
