Starting in September for four months, Thessaloniki will be transformed into a mega- laboratory of contemporary art as part of the fourth Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art. Acclaimed artists from around the world will be exhibiting their work, while also participating in art installations around the city, educational programs and performances alongside Greece’s best artists.
The theme this year is the Mediterranean sea, under the general title ‘Old Intersections – Make it New’. Opening night will be held on September 18, with the exhibition Everywhere but Now opening proceedings, curated by Adelina von Fürstenberg, Chief Curator of the Central Exhibition.
The title Everywhere but Now “closely relates the question of space of different genius loci in the Mediterranean area with the question of time of creation in our contemporary world,” Ms Von Furstenberg says.
Over 50 artists from 25 countries including Brazil, Cuba, Iran and India will present their works. Among them will be Marina Abramovic, the filmmaker Jafar Panahi, John Armleder and Ghada Amer and 14 local Greek artists. The works won’t be restricted to just paintings or sculptures, with photography, video installations, films and performances all included. The festival also has an extensive kids program, with many educational workshops and programs organised over the four months.
Admission to all venues of the Fourth Thessaloniki Biennale is free.
