Golden Dawn’s aspirations to open an Australian chapter will be the feature of this Tuesday’s Dateline. The one-hour SBS program entitled Rise of the Neo-Nazis shows reporter Evan Williams trace the history of the neo-Nazi political party and their desire to gain political influence in Australia.
As Greece plummets further due to the crisis, the far-right party has grown in strength due to their anti-immigration messages.
“The life of the Greeks has changed drastically,” Golden Dawn deputy commander Ilias Panagiotaros tells Dateline. “More than two million illegal immigrants in a population of ten million people – which is an enormous number – they literally do whatever they want and they remain unpunished.”
With its popularity growing, Golden Dawn has announced plans to open offices in foreign countries including Australia, despite resistance from Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
“We could tell [Julia Gillard] to look back a couple hundred years to see what they did to the Aboriginals, and not lecturing us about racism and rights,” says Panagiotaros. “You’ll see us in Australia – summer or a bit later, but you’ll definitely find us there.”
Rise of the Neo-Nazis will air on Tuesday 21 May, on SBS ONE, Dateline at 9:30 pm.
